Our Self-Understanding as an Educational Institution

Identity and Mission

We offer the following educational seminars for all groups of migrants: basic education and literacy, language and specialized language courses, as well as professional qualification. The goal of all our educational measures is to assist and advance the social and professional integration of our participants so that they can enjoy greater social participation.

We are led by the ideal of an open, pluralistic, democratic society and stand within the tradition of enlightened thinking and humanism. We put great value in mutual respect, equal opportunity, and intercultural and dialogically based teaching and learning.

We see ourselves as a "learning institution" that sees qualitative development as a continuous process, that is open to innovations and flexible to the constantly changing challenges and demands of educational work. Our students and clients are the benchmark of our work.

Clients

Our educational opportunities are open to all groups of migrants. With its long-term experiences in psycho-social counseling we have developed specific competences in the area of supporting the disadvantaged. By working with smaller groups and using trained staff attuned to our target groups, we aim to overcome educational barriers and factual disadvantages for our students on the job market.

Clients find their way to us via the JobCenters of the Federal Employment Agencies (Bundesagentur für Arbeit), they are referred by migration organizations, learn about our offers in their Communities or through our public relation activities.

Cooperation Partners

In the area of job qualification measures for the healthcare and care sector we cooperate with a large hospital provider (the Vivantes Network for Health GmbH) and for the commercial sector with business enterprises (such as HORNBACH-Baumarkt AG, Gegenbauer Holding SA & Co. KG), and the Berliner Stadtreinigung (Municipal Sanitation Department).

Funders

On behalf of the Federal Agency for Migration and Refugees (Bundesamt für Migration und Flüchtlinge, BAMF) we conduct integration courses. All other courses are financed by the Federal Ministry for Education and Research (Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung, BMBF) and the European Social Fund (ESF).

General Goals

With our offers we aim to strengthen the individual development of our participants regarding their personal, health, social and political needs, to improve their career chances and to make a contribution toward their social integration.

As educators we aim to further develop the transition from language courses to job qualification and to win more cooperation partners on the job market. A further goal is to continuously develop our expertise in the area of literacy and evaluation. In addition to this, we constantly strive to maintain the high standard of our language courses, to expand projects for certain target groups, and to increase the number of specialized integration courses for parents, women and youth as well as remedial courses.

Qualifications

We are specialized in migrant and refugee work, as well as in adult education.

Accordingly, we plan and organize suitable educational and learning programs, conduct them, and test their success. Our language and qualification courses are student-orientated and up-to-date regarding professionalism and methodology. The course instructors represent methodological concepts tailored for adults and action- and participant-orientated learning. In their teaching, they show a special aptitude for empathy and are committed to developing a pedagogical relationship to their students.

The Definition of Successful Learning

The goal of our courses is to improve our students' language, personal and career skills with regard to a successful integration process.

Within this context, successful learning means that the students can personally experience a widened scope of action in everyday situations, particularly in their skills to engage in improved social interactions. Furthermore the students develop skills that further their chances of integration in the job market. Thus, they are better capable of reaching both their personal and externally set goals of integration.

We also speak of successful learning when our students have a positive educational experience that increases their self-confidence and their motivation to continue learning. Successful learning enables the individual to recognize one’s responsibility in the learning process and also supports independent life-long learning.

What we offer

In the area of language courses we currently offer literacy, integration and specialized language courses. Also migrants, who are not entitled to take an integration course on account of their residential status, can take literacy and language courses with us. In the area of vocational training for the healthcare and care sector, we offer preparation and supervision during the training, as well as qualification measures for health care assistants.

Resources

Our project managers are in charge of the planning, development and assessment of our services and course offers.

Our pedagogically and professionally qualified course instructors are responsible for the realization of our courses. The team the Department for Refugee and Migration Services is open to any questions regarding enrollment and orientation. All of our employees participate regularly in continuing education.

All courses take place in classrooms that meet the specific demands of each learning context.

We are financed by funds from the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, the European Refugee Fund, the European Integration Fund, the German UNHCR, the State of Brandenburg and the State of Berlin, among others. Our integration courses are funded by the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees.
